People with long term illnesses, like dementia, are often entitled to benefits – but exactly what those benefits are and how to get your hands on them can be a bit of a challenge. Carers are often too busy and too stressed to go hunting for financial help they’re not even sure they should have.
Happily for Bassetlaw residents, help is at hand. Lesley Parks, formerly of Cosmic Cottage, has reopened the Goodwin Hall on Thursdays and Saturdays. Traditionally the Goodwin has been exclusively for the use of the elderly and disabled, but now anyone can drop in for a cuppa, a friendly chat and a bacon butty – and on Thursdays, the opportunity to speak to one of two Benefits Advisors in attendance. They’re kind, they’re friendly, they know their stuff and they’ll help you fill the forms in, no appointment needed; if they’re not busy, they’ll see you straight away.
Several members have already consulted them and said what a wonderful service it is. They also commented on how friendly people were and how nice to sit and have a chat with others over a cup of tea.
Thursdays no good to you? No problem. The same two advisors are at the Time Machine on Fridays from 1.00pm to 3.00pm; you can pop in there and ask to see them. Again, it may not be necessary to make an appointment.
Whatever your situation, if there’s a possibility that you may be entitled to benefits, go and find out! £16bn a year in means-tested state benefits is unclaimed!
If you care for someone with dementia or you yourself have a diagnosis, you may find help through the Wednesday Group or the Carers’ Group. For more information about either group contact Jan on 01777 709974 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com
