by | 12 March 2021 | Children's Group, Retford, Worksop

Bassetlaw Youth Council’s proposal to have a Youth Mayor was approved by Full Council on 10th December and the election process will commence in March. This ambassador for young people across the district will work closely with the Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw, the Bassetlaw Youth Council and the Charter Mayors in Worksop and Retford, along with the Chairman of the District Council.
They will attend events and perform duties that will recognise and celebrate the achievements and aspirations of young people in the district.
Simran Uppal (Member of Youth Parliament for Bassetlaw) said “We at the Bassetlaw Youth Council believe this to be an excellent opportunity for young people to both: learn about our district and nurture a variety of transferable skills necessary for their futures. Being the member who took this to the councillors, I am highly appreciative of the great amount of support and enthusiasm councillors gave.”
The nominees are put forward by the Bassetlaw Youth Council. The nominees will be asked to write 150 words on why they should be the Youth Mayor and then these will be posted onto the Bassetlaw Youth Council page on the Bassetlaw District Council website, www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/community-and-living/children-and-young-people/bassetlaw-youth-council/, and the Youth Council Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/Bassetlawyouthcouncil/. The voting will open on 15th March for two weeks and the successful young person will be announced at the end of March.
The Youth Council is currently recruiting so if you are between 11 and 19 years old and interested in joining the Youth Council, which offers lots of opportunities and a chance to represent young people in the district please drop an email to youth.council@bassetlaw.gov.uk.
