It’s all gone a bit ‘Back to School’ at Cath Ray Gallery and Studios on Bridgegate in Retford. Young people are returning to their After-School Clubs on Mondays (4.30pm – 5.30pm), Thursdays (4.15pm – 5.15pm), Fridays (3.30pm – 4.30pm or 4.00pm – 5.00pm) and Saturdays (1.15pm – 2.15pm) where they get to meet like-minded young artists and create arts and crafts in small, supportive groups. There is also a Children’s Mystery Writing group on Tuesdays (4.00pm-5.00pm) with Caroline Farrar, an English Language and Literature tutor from Barnsley, as well as an author of children’s fiction. Caroline also provides one-to-one English tuition for GCSE and A level exams and re-sits at the gallery on Tuesdays.
Classes also run for adults with two hour taught art sessions on Monday (1.00pm – 3.00pm), Thursday (7.00pm – 9.00pm), and Saturday (3.30pm – 5.30pm). This month’s theme is ‘Water’, and ‘Colour-mixing for Painters’ starts in October. There are more general art clubs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings (10.00am – 12.00pm), where you can just come and do your own art in lovely, quiet, and calm space.
Lou’s Colourful Crafts takes over one Tuesday morning per month (19th September, 10.30am – 12.00pm) and this engaging tutor also runs a parent and child craft workshop once a month on Saturday mornings (23rd September, 10.30am), where you can all come and craft together.
For those wishing to produce art as part of their improved mental health and wellbeing, ‘Painting and Meditation’ is a one-off workshop that aims to give you skills for life in clearing the mind so that you are free to explore your creative side. We spend so much time these days taking information in, that it is beneficial to allow space for our own ideas come out. Artist Femke Williams will guide participants through the process and there will be opportunity to meditate, paint and enjoy a tasty vegetarian lunch. Places are limited, so booking is essential.
