For more than three centuries, Sloswicke’s Almshouse Charity has supported people in Retford by providing safe and affordable homes.
Founded in 1658 by local philanthropist Richard Sloswicke, the charity began by offering accommodation for six older residents. Over time it has grown and adapted, and today provides 46 almshouse homes across several sites in Retford.
Almshouses offer a distinctive form of housing, combining independent living with the benefits of a small, supportive community. For many residents, they provide security, companionship and a strong sense of belonging.
Like many charities, Sloswicke’s relies on volunteer trustees to guide its work and ensure it continues to serve the local community effectively. The board is now looking to welcome new trustees who would like to contribute their skills and experience.
Those with experience in areas such as working with people, property, finance, communications or charity governance would be particularly welcome, although previous trustee experience is not essential. The board meets around six times a year in Retford.
