December came and went at 7th Retford Scout Group. A lot of people were very busy with Scout Christmas Post (more below), but the young people still had their weekly sessions.
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had a try at Christmas crafts and finished the term with a party. The Beavers did some craft activities and played games. The Cubs coloured in some plastic pots and planted some bulbs to take home and grow – and then it was suggested they give it to someone. Another week the Cubs worked in small groups to complete different skills they can use at home: they all made a hot drink, laid a table for four people, changed a light bulb in a table lamp, cleaned their shoes and learned how to iron their neckerchief or handkerchief.
The Scouts discussed all the uses there are for the neckerchief (the coloured scarf all Scouts wear). They used them to make a sling, following up by looking at some Emergency Aid skills. Scouts made some lanterns from garden canes and thick waterproof tissue paper. The Explorers made the lanterns with the Scouts and joined in with the party.
Between Christmas and New Year, the Cubs and Scouts had a hike from South Wheatley back to Retford. Some parents joined in with the hike. It was a lovely winter day.
Christmas Post
Santa’s little helpers worked extremely hard this year! The Scout Groups would like to thank everyone who bought stamps and trusted them to deliver their Christmas cards. Retford Area Scout Christmas Post helpers sorted and delivered over 3,500 Christmas cards in the local area, with 36 families helping to deliver the cards.
In total, over £1,200 has been raised for the three Scout Groups involved in the scheme: 2nd Tuxford, 1st East Markham with Askham and 7th Retford. Thank you to the 20 businesses who sold stamps and also to those who had a post box.
