75 years of the WI in East Markham

by | 13 May 2024 | Retford, Social Group, WI

On 19th March, 46 East Markham WI members celebrated the founding of the village’s Women’s Institute in 1949 with a Birthday Dinner.

The theme of the evening was 1940s and 50s, the village hall was suitably decorated and a number of members took up the invitation to dress for the period.

April was the start of the new WI year, where memberships were renewed, and the Annual Meeting in May is for members only, when reports and accounts from the previous year are presented and approved, a committee for the 2024-25 year is elected and a President chosen. To continue their 75th celebrations a display of record books, photographs and interesting items from WI archives will be on display.

If anyone has any WI memorabilia they would love to see it; contact any committee member if you would like to bring it along in May.
On 18th June there will be a costumed speaker, when Sue Floyd will be ‘Bess of Hardwick’, the builder of the beautiful Hardwick Hall. In July there will be a Summer Social Evening with Magic from Paul Vickers.

New members (£48.00) and visitors (£5.00) are always welcome. Visitors may attend for a maximum of three meetings, after which it is hoped they will join. East Markham WI is a friendly, fun loving, mixed age group of women, which offers a programme of inspiring talks, demonstrations and other events throughout the year. Why not go along and see what is on offer?
