Gardens throughout Retford are bursting with colour as summer arrives, and preparations are now under way for this year’s Retford in Bloom competition.
Organised by Retford Civic Society, the annual competition celebrates the efforts of residents, businesses, schools and community groups who help make the town a brighter and more attractive place to live, work and visit. Floral displays across the town provide colour and enjoyment throughout the summer months, helping to lift spirits and enhance the local environment. While Kings’ Park continues to provide outstanding displays thanks to the work of Bassetlaw District Council, Retford in Bloom focuses on recognising the contribution made by individuals, organisations and community groups.
Judging will take place in early August, with winners being announced at a presentation evening at Grove Street Methodist Church on Wednesday 23rd September 2026 at 6.30pm.
Nominations and entries are now being sought in the following categories:
- Best Front Garden
- Best Waterfront Garden
- Best Floral Shop or Business Front
- Best Public House Display
- Best Community Environmental Project
- Primary School and Secondary School Categories
Schools may enter gardening or growing projects they have undertaken during the year, and can also take part in the potato-growing and sunflower-growing competitions.
The organisers are encouraging residents to nominate gardens, businesses and projects that have impressed them. Anyone who has admired a particularly attractive display while out and about in Retford is invited to submit a nomination.
Entries are limited to locations within the boundaries of Retford and may be submitted by contacting this year’s Retford in Bloom coordinator, Derek Turner, on 01777 702929 or by emailing rcs@retfordcivicsociety.org.uk.
Nomination forms are also available from The Hub in Cannon Square, Denman Library on Churchgate and Bassetlaw Museum on Grove Street. All entries should be received by Friday 31st July and emails should be headed Retford in Bloom.
Residents are also welcome to nominate their own gardens or those of family members. The results will be published following the presentation evening in September, recognising the people and organisations whose efforts help make Retford bloom each year.
