Retford Men’s Probus Club

by | 22 January 2019 | Group meeting, Probus

Retford Men’s Probus Club has been running since 1971. Meetings take place at the Westhill Community Centre, Ordsall at 10.00am every other Friday. If you want to get involved please see www.retfordmensprobusclub.org.uk.
The club’s last three speakers have been really interesting ones. First, Benjamin told us about how Buddhism has and does affect his life and how it could help us all to deal with everyday stress. Then the club’s old friend Steve Short told members about the life and times of the entertainer David Nixon. This was a fascinating tale of how David came into television and perfected a style of magic, coupled with comedy. The most recent speaker was George Buchanan, who most of you will know as the owner of Hodsock Priory. He gave members a look back into the Priory’s history, and the interesting characters that lived there, right up to today, where George, his wife and their four children live. Hodsock is a wonderful place to visit, and not just at snow drop time.

On 3rd November Drew Lilleker will be the main speaker. Drew’s talk will be a light-hearted look at the funeral business, not normally thought of as having much humour. After Drew, on 17th November Dave Otter, from Hayton will be discussing an act of ‘Tree Son’. Then on 1st December the club is very lucky to have our local MP, John Mann, giving a talk on his time in politics and life in the Houses of Parliament.

Members feel this is a really interesting autumn programme and if you like the idea of an extremely informal group who meet once a fortnight, have a look at their website. Probus is a non-political, and not a fundraising organisation, members just meet for good old-fashioned fellowship.

The club meets every other Friday morning at Westhill Community Centre, in Ordsall at 10.00am. If you are interested in joining it, please email secretary Dennis Beevers at dennis@denboy.plus.com and he will give you more details.
