Retford Community Singers

Have you been thinking about joining a choir for some time, or maybe returning to singing after a gap of years? Retford Community Singers meet every Tuesday evening at St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford DN22 7BP. They are a large friendly choir, open to all, with the emphasis on the enjoyment of singing in harmony. There are no auditions or solo singing, and no need to read music — the singers make a great sound and are frequently amazed at what we achieve under the inspired direction of Janet Wood.

“Janet’s enthusiasm, musicality and humour, make it all worthwhile on a dark night.” The group’s repertoire is varied, including world music, folk and gospel, pop and more serious pieces. Sometimes they use songs composed by Janet herself, reflecting people and places in our own community or beyond. They sing fresh songs each month, sometimes challenging but always uplifting and fun. A strong section of men, help to provide the choir’s rich sound, as well as women who sing lower or higher parts depending on their preferred range.

“I always feel uplifted.” Sometimes some of the group also sing out in the community. For example, a group sang at the Mayflower 400 celebrations in Bawtry, joining up with their director’s Doncaster-based Quirky Choir. They’ve also done Christmas carolling in local venues. Mainly, however, the choir’s purpose is simply to experience the joy of singing with like-minded people.
