As the New Year begins, many people start thinking about fresh goals, healthier habits and ways to bring more positivity into daily life. For anyone considering taking up running or becoming more active in the coming year, Retford Athletic Club (AC) offers an excellent place to start. With a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and a strong community spirit, the club supports runners of all ages and abilities, from those taking their first steps to experienced athletes chasing new personal bests.

January is an ideal time to get involved, and Retford AC makes that first step even easier by offering three free taster sessions to anyone considering joining. The main club training nights take place every Monday and Thursday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, meeting at Oaklands Playing Fields. These sessions are fully coached, varied and suitable for a wide range of abilities, allowing new runners to come along, meet people and see what the club is about with no pressure and no commitment.

Throughout the year the club will also be launching its successful Couch to 5K programmes. These structured, supportive courses are designed for beginners and have helped hundreds of local people progress from nervous first-timers to proud 5K finishers. Many participants join the club permanently, finding friendship, motivation and a strong sense of achievement. Dates for new Couch to 5K courses will be shared on the club website and social media.

For those seeking a challenge, the early months of the year also bring the return of the much-loved local Cross Country League. Retford AC enjoyed an outstanding season last year, bringing home several team trophies. This winter the aim is to defend those titles, and new runners are always welcome to get involved. Cross country offers a great mix of challenge and camaraderie – mud, hills, teamwork and plenty of cheering – and is an excellent way to stay motivated through the colder months.

Beyond training and racing, Retford Athletic Club plays an active role in the local community, supporting events, encouraging young people into sport and promoting physical and mental wellbeing. The club is also proud of its thriving junior section, which continues to grow year on year. To support this, the club is always looking for additional volunteers to help coach, supervise and encourage young athletes. Expertise is not required – just reliability, friendliness and a willingness to give a little time to help local children enjoy sport in a safe and positive environment.

Anyone whose goal for the coming year is to get fitter, meet new people or spend more time outdoors would be warmly welcomed by Retford Athletic Club. A new year brings new opportunities and there is no better time to take that first step. For more information, visit the club website or social media pages, or email secretary.retfordac@gmail.com.
