Have you heard about open-source software? This alternative to the proprietary — and costly — applications that are usually sold with computers are equally powerful and interface with these commercial products. The key quality that open-source software bring to us, the user, is that they cost nothing!

Clarborough and Welham IT Group have been using open-source software for many years and provide members with free downloads of key open-source applications such as Apache Open Office, Document Foundation Libre Office and Gimp image editor plus a range of more specialised products. Go along to one of their five-week blocks of classes to find out more by using one of their Windows 10 laptops which have these applications installed. If you like it, they can provide the application installations for your own laptop.

To get a feel for what these products can do, take a look at the parish’s community website www.clarborough-welham.org.uk, and go to the Newsletter page. The current and back issues of this publication, which is produced with Open Office, can be accessed there to show the power of this application — a true alternative to Microsoft Office, free of charge!

If any of this sounds interesting, why not get in touch and book your place at one of their forthcoming sessions (a full calendar through to July 2020 is provide on their website mentioned above). Classes run in Clarborough Village Hall on Tuesdays (from 1.30pm to 3.00pm) or Wednesdays (from 10.00am to 11.30am) with the final five-week ‘block’ of classes before the summer break starting week commencing 17th June. Take your own laptop or use one of their Windows 10 machines. For more information or to book your place, contact Greg on 01777 700918 or email clarboroughwelham@gmail.com.
