Retford Community Singers always welcome newcomers at any time and New Year is an excellent time to make a start if you’ve ever thought about having a go. It is a large friendly choir of men and women who just love to sing, mainly for pleasure, with occasional optional events out in the community.
They sing anything with a good harmony including folk, gospel, pop and world music and often include material especially composed by their brilliant musical director, Janet Wood. It’s generally unaccompanied and always uplifting.
There are no auditions or solos and new singers will be well supported by regular members — there’s safety in numbers! The choir does not use written music scores as everything is taught by ear, so they are accessible to anyone, whatever your previous knowledge, and members include beginners as well as people who have sung in choirs for years. They have a strong male section and the full range of female voices.
Their regular weekly sessions always include songs in their current repertoire and some learning of new material, so it’s a mix which is a makes it easy for new singers to join in. Everyone is welcome, even if you think you can’t sing! Sessions take place every Tuesday in term time from 7.30pm to 9.15pm in St Joseph’s Church Hall, Babworth Road, Retford DN22 7BP. There is ample free parking.
The cost is £4.00 per session, £2.00 if you are receiving means tested benefits. No need to book, just turn up any Tuesday from 8th January 2019. For more details call 01777 704038 or 01777 704154 or check www.retfordcommunitysingers.co.uk. Find them on Facebook, @Retford Community Singers.
