The Royal British Legion Retford and District Branch (RBL) would like to thank all of you who supported the poppy appeal. The magnificent total of £62,000 has been achieved by the local branch. This is truly an amazing total.
The allied nations have all paid tribute to those involved in the D Day landings on the 75th anniversary. The people of Retford paid their own tributes at a commemoration ceremony at the War Memorial on 6th June.
This well attended event was very moving with the Standards in attendance, significant words from our Padre Felicity Ferriter, a reading by the Town Mayor Garry Clarkson, The Last Post followed by a well observed two-minute silence, all controlled by Parade Marshall Graham Bonnyman. A special thank you goes to the Town Hall staff for their help and to the market traders who, despite some disruption, were sensitive to the event and of course to all those who attended. Among the wreaths that were laid was a special one that had samples of sand from the five beaches involved in the landings. This had been collected earlier this year by Elizabeth Szeralis and her father. Elizabeth was unable to lay the wreath herself due to exams. Crosses were also laid by pupils from Ordsall Primary School. We were also honoured to have a D Day veteran in attendance, Mr Ken Beard, a rear gunner on two sorties during this mammoth operation.
The celebration of the signing of the Treaty of Versaille, brought an official end to WWI. In conjunction with Bassetlaw Museum, the local RBL is organising a Peace Day celebration 100 years on. The date for this event is Thursday 4th July, from 12.00pm to 2.30pm, with the hope that everyone will bring a picnic to be enjoyed in the beautiful garden at the rear of the museum. There will be fun, games, a sing song and again, everyone is welcome. For more information contact Judith Goodall on 01777 707152.
Don’t forget that help from the Legion can be available for anyone or their dependants as long as you have served for at least seven days in our Armed Forces. There is an excellent website or if you would like more local information contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.
