The Royal British Legion Retford and District Branch would firstly like to thank all of you who visited their stall and gave so generously at Retford Charter Day on Monday 6th May. The 2019 pins and a new pin to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day were available and will continue to be on sale throughout the year. A special commemoration of the D-Day anniversary will be held on Thursday 6th June, in Retford Market Square commencing at 10.50am. All are welcome and there will be an opportunity to lay a wreath or cross. If you require either item please contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.

Following the last five years of remembering the terrible loss of WWI, 2019 gives us the opportunity for a celebration. The Treaty of Versaille, which marked the official end of the conflict, was signed on 28th June. The Prime Minister declared that there should be a celebration of ‘Peace Day’ to be held on 19th July. In conjunction with Bassetlaw Museum, the local RBL is organising a Peace Day celebration 100 years on. The date for this event, however, is Thursday 4th July. An earlier date has been chosen as it is hoped to involve the schools before they break for the summer holidays. The timing for the event is 12.00pm to 2.30pm with the hope that everyone will bring a picnic to be enjoyed in the beautiful garden at the rear of the museum. There will be fun and games and again, everyone is welcome. For more information contact Judith Goodall on 01777 707152.On a more serious note don’t forget that help from the Legion can be available for anyone or their dependants as long as you have served for at least seven days in our Armed Forces. There is an excellent website or if you would like more local information contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.
