Friends of Bassetlaw Museum

by | 16 June 2019 | Heritage

The Friends of Bassetlaw Museum was formed five years ago with the view to supporting the museum financially and promoting the museum within the community. During that time members have enjoyed several talks on such diverse subjects as corn dollies, beer in wartime and the history of bricks, to name but a few. There have also been exclusive events to see items that are not always on public view and previews of exhibitions before they are open to the public. The AGM was particularly well received with an in-house performance of Call My Museum Bluff.

Funds raised by the Friends has enabled several purchases including a picnic bench, money towards the purchase of the Peglar autochromes — a nationally important collection, the repair and maintenance of a local clock now on display and money that has given access to money from the Market Towns initiative. The Friends have also paid for the hanging basket displays that adorn the museum through the summer months.

A quarterly newsletter keeps the Friends in touch with both Friends and museum events and also has articles on local issues.

The annual membership is only £5.00 per adult, £3.00 under 18, or corporate membership at just £20.00. Remember, the museum covers the whole of Bassetlaw and members are welcome from outside the area as well. If you haven’t been to the museum it is well worth a visit and can be found at 40 Grove Street, Retford DN22 6LD. Membership forms can be obtained from the museum or downloaded from the website.
