The final figures for the 2019 Poppy Appeal are not yet in, but early indications are that it will not match the fantastic total achieved last year in Retford and district. However, the amount raised still proves the generosity of the local people and the dedication of all those who helped in any way with the appeal.
The money that the local branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) raise during the Poppy Appeal is fed into the national total and is used to help and support ex- servicemen and their families. Anyone locally who has served for at least seven days in the Armed Forces may be eligible for help. For more information about the help available, the Royal British Legion website has lots of information including the national helpline number.
The 2019 Remembrance Sunday event in Retford Market Square, was well attended and continues to evoke memories for all those who have lost loved ones in past conflicts. The short act of remembrance held on Monday 11th November 2019, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in 1918, was made special by the dedication of a second bench at the war memorial. This was made possible by the generous donation from Mr Mervyn Tacy and Charity on Wheels.
2020 sees the 75th anniversaries of both VE and VJ Day. A full range of activities will take place around Retford on 8th May (VE) with many local groups being involved in the planning process. The local RBL branch is looking to organise an event at Bassetlaw Museum on 15th August (VJ). Publicity about both events will be issued nearer the time.
The first fundraising event of the year will be the Annual Quiz. This will be held at Babworth Road Sports and Social Club on Friday 27th March. Full details will be in next month’s issue. Provisional bookings are now being taken for teams of up to a maximum of six people. Call Judith Goodall on 01777 707152 to book.
The branch holds meetings on the first Monday of the month (except January and August) at Babworth Road Sports and Social Club at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome.
