Enjoy a walk in the countryside at the Rogation Walk on Sunday 12th May from 3.00pm at Scofton Village Hall on the Osberton Estate. Rogation-tide is traditionally the time of year when we ask (rogare is ask in Latin) for God’s blessing on the crops. An ancient custom was to walk the boundaries of the parish, but this is no longer practical, so we will be walking around the beautiful Osberton Estate, finishing at the Village Hall in Scofton, where there will be basic refreshments (contributions welcome). We will then wander down to Scofton Church for 5.00pm for a short service, led by Angie Baldwin, the Canal Chaplain, with well-known hymns and readings, and prayers for a successful growing season. A retiring collection will be taken to go to Christian Aid.
Maps of the route will be available at the Village Hall from 3.00pm. There is a short amble past the bluebells in Scofton Wood, or a longer walk taking in the Jersey cows at Mill Farm, and then an extension, including part of the Chesterfield Canal towpath from Mill Lane to Scofton Lock, so something to suit all walkers. Dogs (on leads, please, because of the lambs and calves in the fields) and children are welcome. For information call 01909 472324.
