If you have an interest in the arts and would like to learn more, please go along to one of The Arts Society Dukeries’ meetings. They have monthly lecture meetings on the first Wednesday of the month (except for summer and winter breaks) and two extra special interest days. Also, in December they have an extra Christmas themed lecture with lunch. Further, they enjoy trips out to places of interest and a holiday for members.
They do not have any meetings in January. Their first lecture of 2020 is on Wednesday 5th February on Indian art, and is titled ‘Portraits of the Maharinas’. The speaker is Dr John Stevens. The Maharajas and Maharinis of India were semi-independent rulers, responsible for governing territories that were outside the direct control of the British Empire. They fascinated the British public and they functioned as powerful symbols of ‘exotic India’. This lecture draws on an extensive collection of portraits and photographs of Indian Maharinis. These images, and the costumes worn, are stunning works of art in their own right.
Their next lecture, on Wednesday 4th March, is about the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera.
The society meet at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick S81 9AP. Coffee is served from 10.00am and the lecture is from 11.00am to 12.00pm approximately. Free car parking is available.
