Retford Lions Club held two events in January for residents in their community, to recognise their service and achievements. At one of the ever popular ‘Steak Pie Suppers’ held at the Golf Club, a clock was presented to Richard Sutton for his continued leadership of the Retford Charter Day.

He explained: “I first attended to represent Lions and Scouts, little realising attending the first meeting that I would celebrate 25 years of Retford Charter Day. The first year was very humble; six stalls and a push roundabout! A far cry from the huge sprawling day we enjoy now. Events have included a cow milking contest with pantomime cows, ‘One man and his duck’ and hamsters racing in plastic balls pulling little dragster cars. I‘ve really enjoyed all aspects of this jewel in Retford’s crown where everybody seems to have a great day.”

The second event, on 21st January, was a thank you to Santa’s helpers and a presentation to some young achievers, with light refreshments. Representatives from the various organisations, including 7th Retford Scouts, Retford and Elkesley Guides, Retford First Responders and the Forget-Me-Nots group, were present together with two young ladies, Sophie Mitchell and Kayla Hall, from local schools who were presented with awards for winning their categories of the annual Lions ‘Peace Poster’ competition.
