Cadets from 1403 (Retford) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) have enjoyed a successful and activity-filled few months, taking part in competitions, training courses and qualification programmes both on and off squadron. At the beginning of July, the squadron took part in the Trent Wing Field Day, achieving first place in Aviation. The competition tested cadets’ knowledge of aerospace subjects, aircraft recognition and the principles of flight. The squadron also secured third place in First Aid, with cadets demonstrating their skills in scenarios simulating real life situations.
Congratulations go to Sergeant Cammack and Cadet Connolly, who successfully completed the Bronze Leadership Course, demonstrating both practical leadership skills and sound theoretical knowledge. Further success came for Sergeant Nunn-Elade, who completed a Bronze Gliding Wings Scholarship and achieved the significant milestone of flying solo. Meanwhile, Cadets Connolly, Lamb, Lobo, Newbury and Simmons completed their Blue Fieldcraft qualification. The course covered a range of outdoor skills, including shelter construction, safe cooking in the field and the fundamentals of concealment and movement in outdoor environments.
The squadron also recently welcomed families to a graduation evening for its latest intake of recruits. Parents and carers were able to watch cadets demonstrate newly acquired skills and meet the staff who support their development. Behind the cadets’ achievements is a dedicated team of volunteers. The squadron’s civilian committee organises fundraising activities to support cadet opportunities, while uniformed and civilian instructors deliver training across the wide range of RAFAC subjects and activities.
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets offers young people opportunities in flying, shooting, camps, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, sport and much more. Membership is open to young people from school Year 8 up to the age of 17. The squadron is also keen to hear from adults interested in volunteering, whether in uniformed roles, civilian instructor positions or as members of the civilian committee.
