For those with an interest in the arts in all their various forms, The Arts Society Dukeries may be of interest. Members enjoy a lecture on most first Wednesdays of the month, along with two special interest days, a holiday, and local theatre and coach trips. Members also receive newsletters and a national art magazine. Anyone interested is welcome to attend a meeting to find out more.
At the next meeting, the society will celebrate its 45th anniversary, with fizz and cupcakes served after the lecture. Members, former members and guests are invited to stay and join the celebrations.
Upcoming lectures are:
Wednesday 6th May
Noël Coward – The Man Behind the Mask by Simon Whitehouse
“I don’t know what it is, but I’ve got it.” That ‘it’ was star quality, and the person who had it was Noël Coward. While he is often remembered for his witty one-liners and flamboyant public persona, Coward was one of the most versatile cultural figures of the 20th century, with a career that mirrors the development of modern British theatre.
His works, including Private Lives, Hay Fever, Mad Dogs and Englishmen and Mad About the Boy, demonstrate the remarkable breadth of his talent. As Lord Mountbatten once observed, there may be greater painters, comedians or novelists, but only “The Master” combined so many talents in one individual.
The lecture will explore Coward’s life and work, including some of his lesser-known poetry, offering a fuller picture of his contribution to the arts.
Wednesday 3rd June
The Age of Jazz by Sandy Burnett
This lecture explores one of music’s most important genres, tracing the early years of jazz up to the Second World War and examining its wider influence on music. Jazz is presented as a fascinating blend of structure and creativity, combining ensemble performance with imaginative improvisation.
Meetings take place at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Lectures run from 11.00am to 12.00pm, with refreshments available from 10.00am. Free car parking is available. Visitors are welcome and can pay on the door.
