November promises to be another busy month at Retford Arts Hub as preparations for Christmas gather pace. The latest exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery, Flora and Fauna, runs until Friday 14th November, after which the space will be transformed for the festive Christmas Market. The market, open from Saturday 15th November to Wednesday 24th December, is perfect for finding unique handcrafted gifts, stocking fillers and decorations created by talented local artists and makers.
The popular painting classes continue this month, with John Redfern Harris leading a watercolour session on Wednesday 5th November and an oil painting class on Monday 10th November. Both workshops run from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with all materials provided, and cost £25.00. On Monday 17th November, Melanie Eldred will lead a beginners’ stained-glass workshop from 10.30am to 12.00pm at £28.00 per person. Each participant will create a festive glass tree decoration – an ideal gift or keepsake.

The ever-popular Kids Club sessions will take place on Saturday 8th November and Saturday 22nd November, with early booking recommened to avoid dissapointment.  This month, the hub also shines a spotlight on one of its resident artists Mark Bloomer. Frin a young age, Mark was drawn to art, particularly wildlife. His early work focused on pencil drawings of subjects ranging from Eagles to Elephants, but over time he developed a passion for painting and now works mainly in oils. He spends much of his time painting en plein air, capturing local landscapes and urban scenes, often spotted around Retford with his easel and paints.

A highlight of Mark’s career so far was his selection as a wildcard contestant for Landscape Artist of the Year 2026, where he spent time painting in Keswick alongside other talented artists. His first major solo exhibition, Golden Light, will be held at Bassetlaw Museum from Saturday 15th November to Saturday 8th February. A preview event will take place on Saturday 15th November at 1.00pm, and everyone is warmly invited to attend and view his latest work.
