As the colder and wetter months approach, it’s the perfect time to consider joining Retford u3a and making the most of its wide range of activities. For those no longer working full-time and looking for ways to stay active, engaged and connected, Retford u3a offers an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and have fun.
Members have enjoyed a busy and varied month of activities. One of the highlights is the Military History Group, which has announced a four-day trip to London and Kent in May. Planned visits include Churchill’s War Rooms at Whitehall, his residence at Chartwell, Walmer Castle, and a ride on the Hythe and Dymchurch Railway to Dungeness. Spaces are still available for those interested. The group meets monthly on the second Thursday at 9.45am at Hallcroft Community Centre, with an additional Zoom session on the fourth Monday at 1.45pm.
A new and increasingly popular addition to the u3a programme is The Idle Frets – a ukulele group meeting on Thursday mornings. All skill levels are welcome, from complete beginners to experienced players. The ukulele is a wonderfully accessible instrument for anyone, with or without previous musical experience, and the sessions also include plenty of opportunities to sing along – vocal ability not required!
Members and visitors are warmly invited to attend the General Meeting at The Well, Retford, where Group Leaders and members are available to chat about their activities and encourage new participation. Each meeting features a guest speaker, offering entertaining and thought-provoking talks on a wide range of subjects. At the most recent meeting, Paul Cookson entertained everyone with his lively mix of anecdotes and poetry.
Those interested in topical discussion might enjoy the Current Affairs Group, which meets fortnightly to explore news stories and issues affecting both local and global communities. Meetings encourage open conversation, the sharing of perspectives and thoughtful debate in a respectful and friendly environment. Occasionally, members deliver longer presentations on specific topics of interest. Whether discussions are serious or light-hearted, the aim is always the same – for everyone to learn something new and feel heard and valued.
Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend a group session before deciding. To find out more about what’s on offer or to view the full list of groups, visit retford.u3asite.uk
