Voglia d’Italia

by | 1 November 2025 | Group meeting, Local Experiences, Retford

‘Byron and Italy’ is the title of the talk at the next meeting of Voglia d’Italia (the Italian Society for South Yorks and North Notts).

Anne Amison talks about Byron’s life in Italy (1816-1823), during which time he wrote some of his most famous works. He developed a love of wild swimming and is reported to have swum the length of the Grand Canal in Venice and also 8km across the Gulf of La Spezia to visit his friends, the Shelleys. “With all its sinful doings, I must say, That Italy’s a pleasant place to me”: from Beppo, a Venetian story by Lord Byron.

Join Voglia d’Italia on Friday 7th November at 7.30pm, Tickhill Parish Room, Northgate, Tickhill DN11 9HZ. Non-members are welcome and admission is £5.00 for non-members.
