Retford u3a is thriving and open to new members. If you are no longer working full-time and are looking for interesting activities and good company, then this is the place for you. Members enjoy a wide variety of activities each month. The General Meeting, held at The Well in Retford, is an opportunity to meet up, have a cuppa and enjoy talks by local speakers. The next meeting will take place at 1.30pm on Thursday 25th September.

Last month’s speaker, Sam Millard, captivated everyone with his talk A History Mystery. In September, members can look forward to hearing from Paul Cookson, Retford’s Town Crier, who is also a poet, ukulele player, performer and part-time rock star. Visitors are welcome to attend before joining, meet members of the committee and group leaders, and discover more about what is on offer. The walking groups cater for all abilities, with four levels to choose from, allowing members to progress to more challenging routes as their fitness improves. Fresh air, good exercise, an appreciation of the countryside and convivial company are the hallmarks of these groups. Recently, the Moderate Walking Group completed the Three Trent Valley Village Walk, a five-mile route across fields, riverside paths and tracks linking Rolleston, Morton and Fiskerton.

For those preferring a more leisurely pursuit, the Watercolour Group continues to grow and has moved to a larger venue in Edwinstowe to welcome more members. Watercolour painting is easy to set up, requiring little more than paper, paints, brushes and water. Each month, members interpret a theme with support from expert Jon Lovell and one another, producing a diverse and engaging collection of work. Members can also join the Green Conversation Group, aimed at improving understanding of environmental issues in the UK, with a focus on Retford, homes and gardens. This is part of a wider initiative supported nationally by the u3a, which also publishes a newsletter, Second Nature.

New interest groups are always being developed, with members guiding one another through discussion groups, workshops and social activities. No qualifications are required – just a willingness to share, learn and enjoy life.
Make the most of your free time by joining Retford u3a. Every day is a chance to discover something new, meet someone different and create memories.
