The Arts Society Dukeries meets on the first Wednesday of most months at Carlton Civic Centre to hear a lecture on a specific art topic. The society is now halfway through its exciting 2025 programme. As well as these lectures and social gatherings, members can enjoy study and special interest days, holidays with the society, trips to local events and theatres, and a summer coach trip to Buxton Opera House. Members also receive newsletters and a national magazine.
On Wednesday 1st October, the lecture will be ‘Charles I – King and Collector’, presented by Barbara Askew. This lecture celebrates the 400th anniversary of Charles I’s accession to the throne in 1625. His obsession with collecting works of art began as a 22-year-old prince when he travelled to Spain and saw the magnificent collection of King Philip IV. On becoming king, he purchased the fabulous collection of the Gonzaga Dukes of Mantua, which included works by Titian and Raphael, as well as Andrea Mantegna’s astonishing series of paintings, The Triumphs of Caesar.
The following lecture will take place on Wednesday 5th November, when Rupert Willoughby will speak on Marathon. This lecture examines the battle of Marathon, explaining why the victory saved Western civilisation and exploring the influence of ancient Athens on art and culture.
A study and special interest day will take place on Thursday 27th November, entitled From Levina to Artemisia. This will feature three detailed lectures throughout the day about women artists and patrons of the Renaissance.
The society meets at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Tea and coffee are available from 10.00am, followed by society notices at 10.50am. The lecture runs from 11.00am to around 12.00pm, depending on questions. There is free car parking.
