What happens when creative children, musicians, writers, Rotarians and community members come together for a day? A peace anthem is born. With lyrics inspired by poet Ian Macmillan and music composed in a one-day workshop led by Luke Carver Goss, this compelling song carries a heartfelt message of unity, compassion and hope – inspired by Rotary International’s mission to promote peace worldwide.
Ninety-nine children from eight Rotakids schools attended Ranby House for a full day of rehearsal and recording. Thanks go to Luke Carver Goss, Ian Macmillan, Gary Hammond, Chris Edge and Dave Williams for their support. The video was shown to Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick when she visited Nottinghamshire. She was so impressed with the Peace Anthem that she arranged for it to be shown at the recent Rotary International Convention in Calgary, attended by 16,000 Rotarians from 140 countries.
It has also featured in the Rotary magazine, which is distributed to all Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland (magazine.rotarygbi.org/august). You can also listen to the podcast on Retford Rotakids Radio and via the club website.
Big Band Bash Concert
This concert was organised by the Retford Rotary Club in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs of Doncaster and Doncaster Knights, and involved a band from Germany alongside the Doncaster Youth Jazz Band. The concert was in memory of Past President Vince Hines, who supported the band over many years. Vince was also the instigator of the Bread Fund – a project that continues today, providing breakfast to many underprivileged primary school children in South Africa. The concert raised £764 for the Bread Fund. Some of the children are shown wearing jumpers knitted by supporters.
Looking ahead
The club has just started its new Rotary year and is planning many projects to help local causes and raise funds for both local and international charities.The annual Swimathon will take place on Saturday 7th March 2026 at Retford Leisure Centre. This is always a fantastic day, with swimmers of all ages testing themselves while raising money for charity.
