The Retford Community Singers’ new term starts in Chapelgate Hall, to the rear of Grove Street Methodist Church, DN22 6LA, on Tuesday 2nd September, 7.00pm to 8.30pm. Sessions usually coincide with local school terms and cost £5.00, payable at the door (half price for those on means-tested benefits).
The choir was established in 2012 and has been led ever since by inspirational singer-songwriter Janet Wood. Open to all, regardless of experience, the group sings anything with a good harmony, such as gospel, world music, classic pop songs and specially composed music for the choir. Singing is mainly for the joy of it rather than polished performance, though there are occasional community appearances. In the past year the choir has supported Heritage Day in Retford, the Methodist Star Festival, Christmas carols at Bassetlaw Museum, a celebration and unveiling of a blue plaque for local Suffragist Jessie Craigen, and midsummer busking on Make Music Day. Everyone is welcome at this friendly, enthusiastic group – just turn up any Tuesday to give it a try. Singing is good for the body and mind, uplifting and fun.
The hall is a warm, modern, fully accessible venue for anyone with limited mobility. Parking is limited on site but there is plenty on Grove Street and in nearby car parks, with no charge after 6.00pm.

Look out for the choir on the morning of Heritage Day in Retford, Saturday 13th September, singing on the steps of the Town Hall for the opening ceremony at 10.00am, then at various locations around town to fit in with this year’s theme of architecture.
