The Retford Archaeological and Metal Detecting Group has launched a JustGiving fundraising campaign to support their ongoing excavation in Littleborough and to help establish a small museum within Littleborough Church. The proposed museum will be located in the Vestry and will be open to the public. It aims to outline the history of the church and provide insight into the local community of the past.
The project is supported by Bassetlaw Museum and will include displays about the nearby Segelocum Roman fort and findings from the current excavation, which has uncovered walls and a possible Roman-era roadway. Although plans were made to investigate the Segelocum site directly, permission from landowners has not been granted. All archaeological work is conducted with the support of the County Archaeologists Department.
Further local digs are also in the planning stages, as the group continues to receive promising new leads and information to explore. Founded in 2024, the Retford Archaeological and Metal Detecting Group welcomes members from across Nottinghamshire with an interest in local history. The group combines archaeological investigation and metal detecting with a strong commitment to community education and outreach.
