Summer Progress at Muddy Fork

Muddy Fork, Retford’s Gardening for Wellbeing charity, has continued to benefit from good growing conditions this year, though watering during the heatwaves has proved a challenge. In fact, on the hottest days, doing anything at all in the garden has been a challenge.

An explosion of tomato plants has filled the polytunnels, still leaving surplus plants that had to be rehomed off-site. Many of the fruits are already a good size and the harvest is eagerly anticipated. Other produce is also looking healthy. The beans have finally thrived – at the third attempt – despite the best efforts of rabbits, slugs, pigeons, geese and other local residents. The first of these have now been eaten, as have early potatoes, some courgettes and cucumbers, and a truly magnificent cauliflower, with more expected to follow. The onion harvest is safely stored in the polytunnel for now. Newly established strawberry runners look set to be productive next year, which is promising, as the current strawberry plants are well past their prime.

Rose’s visit to East Markham Gardening Club was a success. Members were interested in all aspects of Muddy Fork’s work, including the bee-keeping and willow-growing. They purchased honey, willow for crafts, beans and plants, and also made a small but very welcome donation to Muddy Fork funds. Requests from other gardening clubs in the area interested in inviting Rose to speak at one of their meetings would be warmly welcomed – just get in touch. As ever, visitors to the garden are also welcome.
