Summer Reading Challenge 2025: Story Garden

Saturday 5th July to Sunday 7th September, library opening hours

This year’s challenge celebrates adventures in nature and the great outdoors. The challenge, aimed at children aged four to 11 years, is to read six or more library books over the summer. You can sign up at any time during the summer. For every book read, children will pick up rewards and every child who completes the challenge receives a medal and certificate.

Follow Ozmo & Orbi, two brave little aliens, as they set off on an amazing journey to find the perfect planet! Family Workshop: needle Felted Creatures

Wednesday 6th August, 2.00pm–4.00pm

In this session, children will invent their own animal – combining features like flippers, feathers, claws and manes to create a brand new creature. Using natural wool fibres from British sheep and alpacas, they will learn how to shape and sculpt their design through the process of needle felting. Children can choose to work in 2D or 3D – ‘drawing with wool’ or building a small sculpture. For ages 10+.

Family Workshop: Cyanotype Prints

Wednesday 13th August, 2.00pm–3.30pm

In this session, children will create their own Cyanotype photographic prints and greetings cards. First, they will forage for materials during a short nature walk, before arranging their plants and flowers in unique compositions on light-sensitive paper. Children will watch the magic as their print turns bright blue in the sunlight, capturing their design permanently. For ages 7+.

Family Workshop: Bows and Bandanas

Wednesday 20th August, 2.00pm–3.30pm

Inspired by the playful pet portraits of artist Martha Todd on display in exhibition A Dog’s Life, this session is all about creating accessories for your four-legged friends. Children will learn how to make their own bandana or bow using basic sewing skills and upcycled fabric. No pet? No problem. These handmade creations also make great hair accessories or can be gifted to friends and family. For ages 7+.

Family Clay: Treat Jars

Wednesday 27th August, 2.00pm–3.30pm

In this session, children will be inspired exhibition A Dog’s Life and learn how to make a lidded jar using simple hand-building techniques. They’ll start by shaping the pot, then create a fitted lid using slab and pinch-pot methods, before decorating their design with coloured slips. The jars can be personalised with names, patterns or playful touches – perfect for holding pet treats (or your own favourite snacks if you don’t have a furry friend). For ages 6+.

This year marks the 39th Festival, which celebrates the legend of Robin Hood, Maid Marian and the outlaw band who have made Sherwood Forest famous the world over. The agenda is:

Across the Festival weekends will be a host of brilliant performers including The Sherwood Outlaws, Medieval Maniax, Go Active Falconry, The Academy of the Wolf, De Mowbrays Musicke, Nathaniel Bagshot and the Knights of Nottingham Medieval Jousting Display Team. There will also be traders and craftspeople, offering the chance to pick up a unique or unusual gift from a day the at Festival and archery and axe-throwing.

Admission to the reserve and the performances is free, although parking charges apply – £15.00 per vehicle per day. There will be a small charge for some activities, including archery.

The Grade I listed mansion is set to become the House of Fun – a place of play, where noise and laughter abound. An interactive exhibition includes the huge hang-out den called the Friendship Folly, a scaffold reinterpretation of the Rockingham Monument which Leeds play artist Pippa Hale created with the help of looked-after Rotherham children. And Final Boss, inflatable dinner party food fit for a monster created by Nottingham artist Bruce Asbestos and pupils from Rockingham Junior School and Kiveton Park Meadows Junior School.

Inspired by the Wentworth Garden parties of the past, prepare to be amazing by high-wire stunts from world-renowned performer, Chris Bullzini, acrobatic shows, and hands-on circus workshops. With a lively workshop village, traditional funfair games, craft tents, and music from Thorpe Hesley Brass Band, this is the perfect day out for the whole family!

Alien Invasion Trail

There have been reports of an alien landing at Old Moor! Where could the alien be? What do they look like? Go to each of the stations and pick features to work out what your alien looks like! Find out about adaptations along the way… What weird and wonderful alien will your family create? The Alien Invasion trail is a self-led family adventure available everyday throughout the summer holidays

Solar Sunday

As part of your Big Wild Summer, Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society (MSAS) will be bringing with them telescope equipment that allows you to view the sun safely. This is a great opportunity to hear from the experts how the sun is not just a terrestrial body that warms the planet but supports all life on earth. You will be amazed to understand how the sun is the nuclear engine of our solar system and you may even see evidence of solar flairs, huge magnetic bursts of energy shooting into space.
