Retford u3a is part of one of the largest member organisations in the UK. It is open to individuals who are no longer in full-time work, providing opportunities for learning, socialising, and enjoying a wide range of activities together. There are no age restrictions, and the organisation has a membership of 400,000 across the UK.
u3a offers opportunities to share knowledge with others or acquire new skills through various media. Members use their knowledge and experience to teach and learn from each other, with no qualifications required. The emphasis is on learning for enjoyment.
Many are familiar with the Local Learning Groups, which provide a range of in-person gatherings for those with shared interests, meeting regularly at local venues. Retford u3a’s Gardening and Military History groups are particularly well-attended. In addition to monthly meetings, these groups also organise popular excursions to sites of interest.
u3a has also embraced the digital age, offering numerous online options.
Learn Online presents challenges and projects such as u3a Eye, where members can submit photographs of anything that catches their attention – the top 15 entries are published online. Those interested in geography might enjoy the ‘Where Am I?’ quiz.
There are also online interest groups covering a wide variety of topics, from Agatha Christie Appreciation to Zentangle – an art form involving the creation of intricate designs using repetitive patterns.
For further inspiration, members can explore blogs, podcasts, events, workshops, and the u3a members’ magazine. Additionally, over 80 Subject Advisors are available to support and share their knowledge with members.
u3a members often report an improved quality of life, experiencing increased confidence, reduced loneliness, support in new communities, and opportunities to acquire new skills – fostering a sense of purpose and enjoyment. All activities are conducted on a voluntary basis.

The General Meeting at The Well, Retford, is scheduled for Wednesday 24th July. The guest speaker is Andy Massey, widely known for his large murals around the town, including the striking Spa Common Sheep Fair mural, which transformed the main thoroughfare leading from the town centre to the bus station and Spa Common.
