The Clays Gardening Club would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who supported their Open Gardens event on Sunday 8th June. They hope you enjoyed the day as much as they did! A very special thanks is extended to the 12 garden owners in Wheatley and Sturton-le-Steeple who opened their gardens to the public. A lot of time and energy goes into getting everything ready and efforts really paid off.

The gardens looked beautiful, and many lovely comments were received.

Over 150 visitors enjoyed the day. The bacon and sausage sandwiches proved a real hit, gallons of tea and coffee were served and tables were laden with delicious homemade cakes. Aside from one brief afternoon downpour, the weather was much better than expected. They’re truly grateful to the volunteers and the wider community for making the day such a success.

As part of the event, they also held a scarecrow competition across Wheatley and Sturton-le-Steeple. Despite the unpredictable weather, 13 scarecrows were entered – nine in Wheatley and four in Sturton, each unique and full of personality. It was tough to judge, but the winner was ‘The Ploughman by John and Wenda Tasker who received a £20 gift voucher –congratulations!

Looking ahead, Clays Gardening Club members will this month enjoy visits to David Austin Roses and the RHS Garden Show at Wentworth Woodhouse. They take a short break in August, before returning on 15th September at Wheatley Village Hall for Doug Stewart’s talk on ‘Edible Flowers’. Doors open at 7.00pm and entrance us members £3.00 and non-members £5.00. Your first meeting is free.
