Recent weeks have seen an explosion of growth in the Muddy Fork garden. The welcome rain, following several dry weeks, has encouraged strong plant development and brought relief from the daily task of watering the vegetable beds. Intermittent sunshine between the showers has helped everything – including the weeds – to flourish. The potatoes and onions are particularly thriving, and with favourable conditions overall, this year’s harvest is expected to surpass last year’s disappointing yields.
Muddy Fork, Retford’s Gardening for Wellbeing charity, continues to receive encouraging support from the local community. A recent visit from the outgoing Retford Mayor, David Naylor, just three days before the end of his term, included the enjoyment of bacon sandwiches cooked on the newly constructed barbecue. Further support has come from Asda in the form of a donated blueberry bush, which has inspired the creation of a new blueberry bed. In addition, Rose is due to give a talk to the East Markham Gardening Club in the near future.
This time of year also brings heightened bee activity. The Muddy Fork bees are busy, and with some luck, honey will soon be available – a small supply from last year still remains. Swarms may be spotted in the area as bees search for new homes. The Muddy Fork beekeepers are happy to help with swarm reports, as the garden has suitable accommodation ready for them.
