June marks both the midpoint of the year and the beginning of summer. The 21st June brings the longest day of the year, coinciding with Retford’s Big Market Day and World Music Day. Retford u3a’s Recorder Group will be performing in the town square to mark the occasion. These community events rely on local support, so residents are encouraged to add the date to their diaries.
This June also celebrates a key milestone – 15 years since a group of enthusiastic locals established the Retford u3a. Since then, it has offered a wide range of engaging activities for members. A celebratory gathering will take place at the West Retford Hotel on Wednesday 18th June, bringing together long-standing and new members for what promises to be a memorable afternoon.
This month, the group spotlights Creative Writing, Cryptic Crosswords and Current Affairs. The Creative Writing Group meets to read and review members’ two-page submissions. These are shared in advance by email and discussed in a friendly, constructive manner. Newcomers with a passion for expression will be warmly welcomed.
For those more inclined to mental challenges, the Cryptic Crossword Group offers just that. A pencil and eraser are essential!
Meanwhile, the Current Affairs Group meets fortnightly to reflect on topical national and international issues, encouraging participants to share ideas, perspectives and occasionally, longer presentations on topics of interest. All views are respected and welcomed.
The General Meeting will be held at The Well on Thursday 26th June. Members will have the chance to catch up with fellow members, meet committee and group leaders, hear from the Chair, Pippa Ramsay, and enjoy the guest presentation. This month’s speaker is local historian and author Adrian Gray, who will present The Top Ten Scandals of Sherwood Forest. This illustrated talk will explore ten historical events involving financial, sexual and political controversy that helped shape Sherwood and the surrounding estates. This free talk promises to be as informative as it is entertaining.
The ever-popular Big Night Out will take place on Friday 27th June and remains open for booking. This members-only event includes a quiz night and is a continuation of the last event’s rollover.
