Step into the story of a child refugee

What would it take for a 10-year-old to leave everything behind? In The Journey, the powerful and newly expanded exhibition at the National Holocaust Museum, follow the unforgettable true story of Leo Stein – a German Jewish boy forced to flee Nazi Berlin on the Kindertransport.

This deeply immersive experience traces Leo’s path from a joyful childhood in 1930s Germany, through rising persecution, to a life-changing journey across Europe—alone. Walk through seven dramatic, beautifully redesigned spaces, including Leo’s family living room, his school, and a Kristallnacht-shattered street. Sit in a replica train carriage where new technology recreates the feel of Leo’s journey into the unknown.

The Journey is more than a single story. The exhibition is inspired by the lives of 36 Holocaust survivors who shared their memories, objects and photographs with the museum. Over 300 original artefacts and 100 video testimonies bring their voices to life. You can even interact with Steve Mendelsson, a Kindertransport refugee, through groundbreaking technology from The Forever Project.

After a £2 million upgrade, The Journey is more moving, more interactive and more timely than ever – reminding us of the human stories behind forced migration. Suitable for ages 9+, this exhibition is a powerful, family-friendly way to explore one of history’s most urgent questions: what makes someone flee their home?

The Journey is included in museum admission. Book your tickets now and experience a story that will stay with you long after you leave. Visit www.holocaust.org.uk/the-journey.
