February’s speaker was Graham Woodward, who delivered a talk titled ‘The Canals – How and Why They Were Built’. Graham is the Chairman of Nottingham Civic Society and has written numerous articles on Nottingham’s industrial heritage. His talk explored the construction, use, and historical changes of canals, which date back as far as the 5th century. Rather than focusing solely on the local canal, he provided a broader history of canal development, culminating in modern innovations such as the Falkirk Wheel – a revolutionary approach to moving water uphill compared to traditional locks.
Meetings with speakers are held at The Crossing on Newcastle Avenue on the third Wednesday of the month from October to April, beginning at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. From May to September, the Association organises monthly visits to National Trust properties and other places of interest. An application form to join the Association can be downloaded from their website, and updates on talks and events are available via the mailing list.
Different payment schemes are available for those who may not wish to attend every event, as individual events can be paid for separately. Membership costs £30.00 for individuals or £55.00 for joint membership, covering seven talks and five outings. Alternatively, a basic subscription costs £5.00 per individual or £7.00 per couple, with an additional charge of £6.00 per talk attended. Visitors, including those who are not National Trust members, are welcome to attend talks for £6.00 per session.
