The Grove WI met on Thursday 20th February at Hallcroft Community Centre and welcomed the return of ex-police detective John Hope, a lifelong serving police officer. He gave a fascinating first-hand account of a murder investigation in Sheffield in December 1993, where he was the Investigating Crime Officer.
The case involved the discovery of a young woman’s body on the top floor of the multi-storey car park at Meadowhall. As DNA technology was in its infancy at the time, it took a while to identify the victim.
However, local press coverage led a mother to report her daughter missing, and she was eventually identified as 17-year-old Fiona Ivison, a local prostitute. A press appeal featuring Fiona’s mother generated further information, enabling significant progress in the investigation.
By the end of December that year, Alan Duffy was identified as the assailant, prosecuted, and jailed for her murder. It was a chilling but gripping account that captivated the attention of Grove WI members.
Future meetings will feature a variety of activities, with more guest speakers planned. The next meeting in April will include an intriguing talk on Freemasonry.
