The outdoor bowls season begins this month. Bowls is a low-impact, moderate-intensity exercise that, according to the NHS, can be just as effective as high-impact activities like running in reducing the risk of heart disease. During a game, players can walk up to three miles, providing a great workout for the legs. The repetitive motion of rolling the bowl also strengthens arm muscles, making it a full-body exercise.
A key skill in bowls is rolling the bowl as close to the jack as possible, which requires good hand-eye coordination. The more a player plays, the sharper their coordination becomes, improving mental alertness and concentration. Bowls also fosters a sense of community, offering opportunities to socialise and build connections, which benefits mental health.
Wheatley Bowls Club will be opening their green on Saturday 12th April. Those looking to play bowls in a relaxed and friendly environment are encouraged to go along to a ‘roll-up’ on a Saturday afternoon at 1.45pm. The club meets at the bowling green, by the car park for the village hall. The entrance is opposite the Post Office in South Wheatley.
The club welcomes both experienced and new players and can provide tuition and some equipment. Club sessions are informal, with members only wearing whites for matches. Players are simply asked to wear flat shoes with little grip to protect the green.
There are opportunities to play competitively, with teams in the Gainsborough League (Monday and Wednesday evenings), the Isle of Axholme Senior League (Tuesday afternoons), and the Ordsall League (Thursday afternoons).
There is no pressure to join immediately, but for those interested, first-year membership is available at a discounted rate of £25.00. For more information, contact Mary on 01427 884778.
The first social event of the season is a Beetle Drive at Wheatley Village Hall on Friday 25th April, starting at 6.00pm. Tickets are £10.00 and include a hot supper of pie and peas. Guests are welcome to bring their own bottle if desired. Tea and coffee will be available. For tickets, contact Fiona on 07818 214128.
