The Arts Society Dukeries

The Arts Society Dukeries meets on the first Wednesday of most months for a lecture on a specific art topic and has an exciting programme planned for the year following the AGM last month. In addition to these social gatherings and lectures, as well as extra study and special interest days, members can enjoy a holiday with the Society, trips to local events and theatres, including a Gilbert and Sullivan production at Buxton Opera House. Members also receive newsletters and a national magazine.

On Wednesday 5th March, there will be a musical lecture: ‘Like a Rolling Stone – Music of the 60s (1965–1969)’, with speaker Steve King.

By 1965, British music dominated the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, with The Beatles blazing a trail across the world. However, in America, the civil rights and anti-war movements were gaining momentum, influencing a new breed of writers and musicians. Electric folk was born, and album sales began to increase exponentially. This lecture explores the second half of the 1960s music scene, featuring The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

This lecture follows on from a highly successful session last year, with the speaker completing the story of the decade’s music.

The next lecture will take place on Wednesday 2nd April, when John Osborne will present ‘Behind the Veil – The Arts of Islamic Persia’.

Iran has a sophisticated cultural heritage, and this lecture illustrates the development of spectacular architecture in the mosques and palaces of Persia through the Islamic period. It will highlight the brilliance of Persian tilework, paintings, classic gardens, and beautiful examples of manuscript illustration, known as miniatures.

The Society meets at the Civic Centre, Long Lane, Carlton-in-Lindrick, S81 9AP. Tea and coffee will be available from 10.00am. Following Society notices at 10.50am, the lecture will run from 11.00am to approximately 12.00pm, depending on questions.

There is free car parking available. Members pay an annual subscription, and visitors are welcome to attend for £8.00 at the door.
