Retford and District Branch of the Royal British Legion

The Retford and District branch of the Royal British Legion have once again been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of the district, who have raised almost £48,000 in the recent Poppy Appeal. Final payments are still being received too.

The appeal relies upon so many people playing their part and thanks are extended to the many volunteers who deliver and collect boxes, the supermarket stores, the cadets, the shops and the outlets who have the collection boxes… the list is endless.

Remembrance isn’t just for November. The British Legion are custodians for remembrance of all those who have fought that in the various conflicts of the past and present. However, 2025 marks two special anniversaries as we celebrate the end of the Second World War – firstly on 8th May VE Day (Victory in Europe) and then late in August for VJ Day (Victory in Japan).

There will be a time to remember, but both of these occasions will be a time for celebration. At the end of the Second World War there was dancing and parties and widespread joy and relief. Watch this space for the exact details of what will be happening locally to mark these dates.

If you, or anyone you know, has memories of growing up during World War II or details of parents that they would like to share, they should ring Ann Hickman on 01777 818993.

In an attempt to serve the local veterans in a meaningful way, a veterans coffee morning was launched at The Well, Hospital Road, Retford, at the beginning of the year. Despite being in their infancy, the meetings have been successful and are now held the first Wednesday of the month (rather than the second Wednesday) from 10.30am to 12.30pm. All veterans will be made welcome.

The group’s branch meetings will also be held less frequently due to the dwindling number of attendees. The next one will be on Monday 3rd March at Babworth Road Sports and Social Club, Retford, commencing at 7.15pm. If you would like any further information about the branch or you would like to get involved in any way, please contact Ann on the telephone number above.
