The subject of the March meeting of Retford and District Historical and Archaeological Society is the Worksop and Retford Brewery. Historically, the areas around Worksop and Retford were centres for the malting of barley for the brewing industry.
In the 19th century, the brewery company Garside and Anderson became the Worksop and Retford Brewery. The brewery grew to own 192 public houses before its takeover by Tennant Brothers of Sheffield in 1959. John Stocks and Dave Pickergill have researched the brewery and will describe the rise and fall of this once significant local business.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th March at 7.30pm in Chapelgate Hall, situated behind Grove Street Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome, and non-members are charged £3.00 per meeting.
On Wednesday 7th May, the society is also hosting an evening with Angus Ashworth, the Yorkshire Auctioneer. He will be familiar to audiences of The Yorkshire Auction House and Antiques Road Trip. Angus has a passion for antiques and has accumulated a wealth of stories and insights during his time in the auction and antiques business, which he will share with the audience.
This promises to be an entertaining and informative evening. The lecture will be held in Grove Street Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Admission is £8.00, and tickets can be purchased in advance at Retford Arts Hub in Churchgate.
