Retford Rotary Club is always pleased to make donations that bring joy to the local community. In January, several members of the club, along with members of the Percy Laws Management Committee and President Marjorie Crookes, visited the Bassetlaw Learning Disability Association (BLDA) at Stephen House in Retford.
Every Thursday evening, a social club is held there for adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. This much-needed and valued activity is funded and run by exceptionally dedicated volunteers. The joy on the members’ faces as they arrived for their social evening was a pleasure to witness, with a wonderful atmosphere as they engaged in activities and conversations with each other and the volunteer staff.
On this visit, the Rotary Club donated a Maypole, provided by a Rotary member via Bracken Lane School, which had stopped using it some time ago. The plan is for this to be a focus for outdoor activities once the weather improves. Through the Percy Laws Fund and the Community Committee, the Rotary Club also made a financial donation to the BLDA for the purchase of sturdy garden furniture. After such an uplifting visit, Rotary members are keen to return in the summer to see how everyone is getting on and enjoying the new activity.
The Retford Swimathon is fast approaching. As one of the largest events on the Rotary calendar, it offers great opportunities to all participants. This year, it will take place on Saturday 15th March at Retford Leisure Centre, with teams of swimmers from schools, local businesses, and charities taking part. Sponsorship funds raised will be shared between Rotary-nominated charities and each team’s own chosen cause. Several local schools are participating, with children gaining valuable experience – not to mention the chance to win trophies and medals.
Anyone approached for sponsorship can be assured that all funds raised will go directly to worthwhile causes. Best of luck to all participants on the day.
Following the success of last year’s fashion show, the event is returning. This year, it will be held at Ye Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor, on Wednesday 9th April from 7.00pm, in support of Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid. Tickets are priced at £5.00 and are available now from Susan Porter on 07980 882087. The event was a sell-out last year, so early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
