The history of RAF Finningley will be the topic for the February meeting of Retford and District Historical and Archaeological Society, where Adrian Sumner will describe the important role of the base from its opening in 1936.
RAF Finningley served as a bomber base during the Second World War and was allocated fighter planes in the early 1950s. From the late 1950s to the 1970s, it was one of the home airfields of the V-bomber force, including the renowned Vulcan aircraft. Later, it became a Support Command base and housed the HQ of the Search and Rescue Force. RAF Finningley was closed in 1996 and has since been transformed into Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th February at 7.30pm in Chapelgate Hall, behind Grove Street Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome; non-members are charged £3.00 per meeting.
