When Retford Men’s Probus Club met for their final monthly meeting before the Christmas break, President Roy Evans was on hand to welcome members, prospective new members, and guests to the event. On this occasion, members’ wives, partners, and girlfriends were also invited.
A warm welcome and seasonal greetings were offered to those in attendance as they mingled whilst enjoying the traditional morning coffee session. Topics raised during the welcome refreshments period included ‘Who cares for the carers?’ Various members have been or are currently carers for family, relatives, or friends 24 / 7, often with relatively little or no reward, and any help available means long waiting lists and extensive form filling. A shout-out for all carers in the area and best wishes for a better New Year.
The meeting began properly when the President rang the opening bell and introduced the day’s event! It wouldn’t be Christmas without the now-mandatory Christmas Quiz. No introduction was necessary, as former group secretary Rob Boeuf outlined the format for the brain teasers. The quizmaster had gone to town as usual, with questions on famous people named Roy, well-known politicians, music from the past, film clips to identify stars or film titles, songs from the shows, and many more, all accompanied by voice-overs and old newsreels from yesteryear.
There was high scoring all round, but when push came to shove, there had to be a winner, even among friends and colleagues. The eventual winner was Fred Payne (last year’s winner defending his title), who triumphed in a tie-break situation with past president Mick Bradford, a close second. A prize was given for joint efforts (couples), with Bob Blatchford taking the last of the prizes on offer.
Well done to all concerned for their efforts, not forgetting the input from one of the club’s stalwarts, Rob Boeuf. The event was deemed by members as another great success for Retford Men’s Probus Club.
Thanks and appreciation were given all round, and President Roy Evans brought the event to a close.
