Exciting developments are underway at the Museum of the Horse as the New Year begins. The old ballroom has been transformed into a new conference room, ready to host various events, including:
Auction – Sunday 16th March
An auction will be held, with items showcased to buyers worldwide through a major auction search system. The museum will charge a £1.00 fee per lot and an 8% selling fee, which will go towards supporting the museum. If you’re clearing out this spring, do get in touch as many items have resale value. The museum accepts antique, vintage, and modern items, although space for large furniture is limited.
VE Day Celebrations – Thursday 8th May
The museum will host a 1940s-themed dance, with period dress optional. The museum also welcomes memories of the old ballroom to help celebrate this special event.
Exhibition: ‘Step Back into Childhood’ – opening Sunday 6th April
This exhibition will showcase children’s pony books and toys, featuring a talk by pony book specialist Jane Badger and a demonstration by Ann Pitcairne, a champion of miniature dioramas. A book fair and refreshments in the conference room will accompany this event.
The Walks of Life Museum is celebrating its connections with museums in China as part of the Chinese New Year festivities, starting on Monday 29th January. This year, the museum marks the Year of the Snake. In keeping with tradition, a deep clean will take place to ‘drive out the dust and bad luck’ of the old year.
The museum will also take part in VE Day celebrations by collecting wartime stories, particularly from Tuxford residents in reserved occupations or those who returned from the war. Frank Newbert, a blacksmith and significant figure in Tuxford’s history, will be honoured. The museum will join the community in creating poppies for a display in the church grounds. Knitted, crocheted, or felt poppies are welcome.

The Walks of Life Museum will remain closed until March, except for special events or prior arrangements, as conservation work is carried out on the house and exhibits.
