A continuing variety

Competitions are a mainstay of Retford and District Photographic Society and the last month saw the Retford club hold two of them. The new season has attracted significant new membership and members enjoyed seeing the newest recruits, including a junior member, entering and overall faring as well as everyone else.

Each competition has classes for prints – colour and monochrome – and digital images. First to judge members’ work was David Kissman and at the second competition, Dave Hollingsworth.

The winners in the first competition were:

  • Colour Prints: Derwent Water by Jenny Smith and Running Lynx by Simon Carr
  • Monochrome Prints: Night Tube by Ben Searson
  • DPI: Locked on to the Prize by Mike Vickers, Splash by Pat Oaks and Left Hanging in Suspense by Joyce Bell

The winners of the second competition were:

  • Colour Prints: Alan Burkwood ‘Amur Leopard and Andy Stephenson ‘Catching the Last Rays.
  • Monochrome Prints: Alan Burkwood ‘Old Timer’
  • DPI: Joyce Bell ‘Pedalling Out to the Horizon’ and Alan Burkwood ‘Autumn on Loch Pityoulish’

Between the two competitions came the club’s first Zoom meeting. This was followed by Derek Doar presenting a collection of his images called ‘Shared Moments’. They were a pleasure to see, but fitted no particular category. John Bolloten brought his presentation ‘Margins’, featuring the lives of people living on the margins of society. This one was not an easy watch, but certainly proved thought provoking.

Members will be providing the entertainment and information in the ‘Members’ Night’ session devoted, for the first time, to Smartphone photography.

The club welcomes new members at any time. Meetings continue on Monday evenings until April 2025. They meet in St Joseph’s Hall, Babworth Road, Retford at 7.30pm. For more information see www.retford-photographic.co.uk.
