The North Nottinghamshire Local Group of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has enjoyed a series of lovely activities over the summer, including walks and visits to places of interest, all blessed with good weather! They have been fortunate given the unpredictable weather.
There are still many outdoor activities available, many taking place at the beautiful Idle Valley Nature Reserve and led by knowledgeable volunteers. Information about these activities is available via regular email updates, which anyone can sign up for, regardless of membership status with the Wildlife Trust (details below).
If you’ve ever wondered why sheep or cows appear and disappear at the reserve, the October speaker, Mike Hyatt, might have the answers.
Mike has been a Trust volunteer since 2017 and handles tasks that might intimidate most, such as chauffeuring sheep and cows, and acting as a nurse, midwife, and all-round animal welfare officer. “Not bad,” he remarks, “considering my previous experience was with cats, hamsters, and the occasional chinchilla!”
The traditional breeds of sheep and cows play a crucial role in promoting biodiversity. Mike will guide the group through a typical year in the life of these essential, hardy, and hardworking animals, detailing their seasonal roles. If you’ve visited the Idle Valley reserve at lambing time, you’ve likely seen Mike caring for newborns and their mothers in the lambing shed. It’s a role that clearly brings him great satisfaction.
The meeting will be held at the Idle Valley Centre, starting at 7.15pm on Thursday 10th October. Entry is £3.00, which includes tea and biscuits. All are welcome, and there is no need to book.
