In an inspiring act of unity and compassion, the Muslim Charity (based in Retford) recently culminated its Pakistan Rickshaw Challenge, uniting participants from the UK, Pakistan and even Vienna, Austria.

Spanning from 30th September to 8th October 2023, this event saw 31 adventurers traverse over 400 kilometres across rural Punjab in 15 brand new rickshaws, which were then gifted to vulnerable families in Multan, providing them with a means to earn a livelihood.

The challenge brought together a diverse group from cities like Glasgow, Stockport, London, and Rochdale, as well as participants from Retford – Greg and Chris Herdman plus Maroof Pirzada who is UK chairman of Muslim Charity. They embarked on a journey that not only aimed at aiding needy families but also allowed participants to immerse themselves in Pakistan’s rich culture. The adven-ture started in Lahore, with participants receiving training to navigate rickshaws, followed by visits to historical sites and participation in the ‘Adopt a School’ project in Nankana Sahib, where they con-tributed to the renovation of a science laboratory.

The journey through Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Khanewal, and finally Multan, was not just a drive across the country but a mission to empower pre-selected vulnerable families. These families, after thorough assessments by Muslim Charity, received the rickshaws under the condition of ensuring their children’s education and not selling the vehicles for at least two years. This initiative promises a brighter future for these families, with one beneficiary, Munawwar, sharing his hopes of tripling his earnings and providing a better life for his family.

Participants were grouped into 11 teams with unique names like Brave Dils, 2 Fast 1 Furious, the Rickshawteers, The Peace Makers and even The Retford Rickshaw, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and competition. The journey also offered a glimpse into the local life and culture, with stops at a cattle farm, a brick kiln, and a taste of organic sugar-cane, enhancing the participants’ understanding and appreciation of rural Pakistan.

The challenge concluded with a heartfelt ceremony in Multan, where the keys and paperwork of the rickshaws were handed over to the beneficiaries. This moment underscored the profound impact of the participants’ efforts, with Muslim Charity’s Chairman, Bakhtyar Pirzada, highlighting the importance of fostering independence and self-reliance among beneficiaries, in line with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In addition to the challenge, participants explored Multan’s rich heritage, visiting educational projects for street children, a school equipped with a new computer lab, and the ancient art of blue pottery, showcasing Muslim Charity’s commitment to education and skill development.

The Pakistan Rickshaw Challenge was more than a journey; it was a transformative experience that united individuals from different backgrounds in a common mission of compassion and social justice. It not only provided vulnerable families with a means to better their lives but also fostered lasting connections among participants and a deep appreciation for Pakistan’s culture and heritage.

Looking ahead, Muslim Charity is excited to announce the next adventure renaming it as ‘The Tuk-Tuk Challenge’, set to take place from 14th to 22nd September 2024. This event promises to be another opportunity for individuals passionate about making a difference to come together and contribute to a noble cause.
