New President Angela Haynes welcomed over 40 members to the March meeting of Retford Ladies Probus Club and introduced herself. She then introduced artist Margaret Clarkson, who delighted members by producing one of her hallmark paintings in 45 minutes.

Margaret is one of the North’s favourite watercolour artists, noted for her look at everyday life in the 40s and 50s. She was a finalist for several years in the Fine Art Trade Guild’s ‘Best Selling Published Artist’ award, and her pictures have been featured in many national and regional publications. Her limited edition prints and original paintings are sold in numerous galleries throughout Britain and attract devotees from even further afield.

Her memoir in pictures comes from her childhood spent in and around her Yorkshire home during the post-war years. She says she doesn’t know if she was really observant then but the detail and atmosphere seems to have become etched in her memory.

Margaret invited members to set the scene for the painting, so the seaside was chosen. She drew three figures and asked what they might be wearing. It was decided that it would not be summertime so they would be wearing coats. Colours were chosen, and finally the title: Bring Me Sunshine.

Margaret’s work can be viewed at the John Bird Studio, Dower House Square, Bawtry and online. The group next meets on Wednesday 12th April at Westhill Road Community Centre, Ordsall, 10.00am for 10.30am when Patsy Rayner will be presenting ‘More Images of Japan’. All are welcome.
